What is it?

The definite article is the word the.

When do we use it?

• To talk about something specific:-
• the Post Office in town is near the station.

• To talk about something there is only one of:-
  • the Sun rises in the East.
  • the President lives in The White House. (Here the speaker means the president of their own country)
    
    
• To talk about something that has already been mentioned:-
• ... we met a man with a dog. The dog was back and white....

We don't have to use the same noun to discuss this object:-

• an old car came round the corner. The vehicle stopped and a tall old man got out of it...
